Normally I'm quite shy about putting my thoughts out there for the entire world to see (and people I can't keep track of, too, reading them) but lately, with fic writing, I thought I should be more involved in fandom, and the whole writing process. What better way, also, to discuss it with people who are infinitely more knowledgeable in this area? What better way to discuss it with people in general?
I think I've kept my thoughts and this journal to myself for too long, zealously guarding them as if they belonged solely to me, which of course they do, but they also hinder my progress a lot and I can never quite get out of the box that is mine, and mine alone.
Anyhow: lately, I've thought quite a lot about characterisation, and what it means to write a multi-dimensional character. What it means to stray away from a Mary Sue. What it means to write a Mary Sue. How some characters are have so much personality to them, a whole range of emotions, while other fall flat on the page.
I'm the last person anyone should ask on the topic; in fact I'm as sensitive to characterisation as I am say, to... kerning a letterhead. I probably can't tell the difference between a well-rounded character and a flat one even if I tried many times over. A lot of my writing is based on intuition, or the lack of, without really thinking through about the personalities of my character(s). Doing without thinking about what I am doing: this is not a good habit to maintain, and I'm looking to change that.
So anyone who is reading this entry, as readers, reviewers, fanfic authors, hopeful writers, bibliophiles, stalkers (HAHAHA!):
What would you say divide a well-rounded character from a flat, one-dimensional character? What is your understanding of characterisation in general? Etc. Examples (especially of one-dimensional characters) would be very helpful. Heck, anything (information, opinions, discussions...) about this topic would be very, very helpful.
